A-x suited- Hold 'em term for an ace and an undercard of the same suit like A5 diamonds or A3 spades
ABC- term used for the 1st 3 cards in Razz and hi-lo split, when they are an Ace, Deuce and Trey
Action- Gambling or loose betting
Active player- Player still involved in the pot
Advertise- To make a loose play with the intent of looking like a loose player
All-in- When all your chips are in the pot
All-in protection- "Anti-Billionaire" rule, the concept you cannot be bet out of or eliminated from a pot because you run out of money
American Airlines- Pocket aces, A-A in hold 'em
Ante- Money or chips each player puts into pot before the cards are dealt
Baby- Term used mainly in razz and hi-lo split to describe a small card (a 5 or less)
Back door- When a player hits a hand he wasn't originally drawing at
Bad Beat- Unlucky turn of events that causes you to lose a hand.
Belly Buster- Straight draw in which only 1 card will complete your hand, otherwise known as an 'inside straight draw'
Bet into- To initiate the betting action with the knowledge that your opponent has a potentially strong hand
Betting the Pot- To bet the total amount of money in the pot in a PL or NL game
Big Blind- An enforced bet which is made 'blind', 2 positions left of the button
Big Dog- A big underdog to win the pot
Big Full- Biggest full house in hold 'em
Blank- Card that doesn't help your hand
Blind- Money posted directly to the left of the button before the cards are dealt
Board- The cards that are face up in a poker game
Boat- Full house. Sometimes referred to as a "full boat"
Bring-it-in-For- 1st optional bet in any poker game
Broadway- Ace high straight
Bubble- Last non paying spot in a poker tournament
Bullet- An Ace
Button- When there is a house dealer a button is put in front of a player to show that they are the theoretical dealer. Passed to each other in a clockwise action
Buy-in- Minimum amount of money necessary to secure a seat in a particular game
Call- To match another players bet

Calling station- Someone who calls other players too often
Check- To not bet. When no one has bet you have the option of checking to remain in the hand without making a bet
Check-Raise- To check then raise within one betting round
Cold call- Calling three or four bets without having previously invested any money in the pot
Community Card- Card which can be used by each player at the table
Country bet- An open-end straight to draw to
Cowboys- Pair of kings, K K in hold 'em
Dealers choice- Game in which the dealer has the option of choosing the game
Deuce- Two
Double belly buster- A two way inside straight
Double up- Increase your chip stack by 100%
Down cards- The cards dealt face down in a stud poker game
Drawing dead- Used to describe a situation where a player cannot win the hand regardless of what cards come up
Ducks- Pocket deuces, 2-2 in hold 'em
Early position- One of the three position to the immediate left of the big blind, in a hold 'em or Omaha hand
Even-money Pot- Used to describe a players chance of winning a pot is approximately 50%
Family pot- A pot in which most players at the table are involved in
Fifth St.- In stud poker, the fifth card to be dealt to each player. In hold 'em and Omaha, the last face up card to be dealt
Final table- Final nine players remaining in a hold 'em tournament, final eight remaining players in a stud tournament
Flat call- Call a previous bet without raising
Flop- First three cards dealt face up in hold 'em
Flopping a set- When out of the flop and your two hole cards, three of the cards are the same rank
Flush- Five cards of the same suit in no particular order
Flush draw- Four cards of the same suit where one more is needed for a flush
Fold- To concede the pot
Four of a Kind- Four cards of the same rank
Fourth St.- In hold 'em and Omaha, the dealing of the fourth community card.In stud poker, the fourth card dealt to each player
Free card- A card received by each active player without any money having been put into the pot because all active players check
Full House- Three cards of the same rank (trips) and one pair, also known as a boat or full boat |
