Heads up- poker being played one-on-one, mano a mano
Hole cards- Players private facedown cards that only he can see
Horse (H.O.R.S.E.)- Game in which you play an equal number of hands or length of time in five different games. Hold 'em, Omaha eight or better, Razz, Seven card stud and seven card stud high-low split
Implied odds- Odds a player factors into his calculation of pot odds to account for being called if you complete your hand
Inside straight draw- Straight draw in which only one card can complete your hand
Jam pot- A jam pot is one which several players are raising and re-raising
Kicker- Side card or highest card with your pair for example
Ladies- Pair of queens
Lay down- Fold
Limit poker- Variations of poker in which the amounts of the bets are preset
Limp in- In hold 'em and Omaha, to call the big blind before the flop
Loose- A style of play in which a player plays a lot of hands
Move in- Put all your chips into one pot
No limit- Variations of poker games in which players can bet as much as they want
Nuts- The best possible hand at that point
Off suit- A term often used to describe the first two hole cards when they are not of the same suit
Open ended straight draw- Draw in which a player can hit two different cards to complete a straight
Outs- When your in the pot with the worst hand but still have cards in the deck that could make you the best hand, "you have outs"
Overcard- A card that's higher than any card showing
Overpair- Pocket pair above the common card's in the middle
Paint- Face card
Pair- Two of a kind
Pocket pair- Pair in a players facedown cards
Pocket rockets- Pair of Aces among a players facedown cards
Position- Refers to where a player is seated relative to the button
Pot- Money gathered in the middle of the table during a hand
Pot odds- Calculation of odds: the size of the pot divided by the cost of calling a bet
Presto- Pair of fives in a players facedown cards
Puck- Button
Raise- Add a bet to your opponents bet
Rag- Weak or unplayable hand
Rake- The percentage extracted from the pot by the house dealer

ReRaise- Raise someone who has raised
Rivered it- Made your hand on the last card
Royal flush- Ace high straight of the same suit
Satellites- Ten handed mini tournaments in which players put up one tenth of the buy in to a poker tournament and the last player standing wins a seat at the main event
Shorthanded- Refers to a game with four or fewer players in it
Sixth St.-Sixth card dealt every active player in stud poker
Slow playing- To play a strong hand weakly
Slow rolling- Flipping the winning hand face up, late, after someone else believes he has won the pot. Considered bad etiquette in poker
Small blind- To the immediate left of the button. Half the size forced bet of the big blind
Smooth calling- Just calling someone else's bet with a strong hand
Split pot- Hand won by more than one player, with the same value of hands divided amongst each other equally
Straight- Five cards in a row of different suits
Straight draw- Having four cards to a straight and needing one card to complete your straight
Straight flush- Five cards in a row of the same suit
Suited connectors- Cards of the same suit that run in sequence
Third St.- In stud poker, the third card dealt to every active player
Three of a kind- Three cards of the same rank
Tilt- Playing badly due to being emotionally unbalanced
Top Kicker- Best possible high card that goes with your pair
Top Pair- Pair of the highest community cards on the board
Treys- Pocket threes
Trips- Common term for 3 of a kind
Turn- In hold 'em and Omaha, the fourth card and the action after the fourth card is turned up
Underpair- Pair underneath the board
Under the gun- First person to act who is positioned directly to the left of the big blind
Walk- Letting the blind win unchallenged
Wired pair- A pair on the first two cards in any poker game
World series of poker (WSOP)- Roughly 33 poker tournaments. It is the biggest and most prestigious series of poker tournaments in the world
Wrap- In Omaha, four consecutive cards in your starting hand
Wrap straight draw- Straight draw in which four different cards make your straight
Zone- Almost mythical place where you're reading players perfectly and making all the right moves |
